Accredited aeronautical and defence machinists Winston & Gordon Davies of Auckland, New Zealand, are renowned for their ultra-precision work which includes telescope components.

Now they have telescoped their own costs and production spans with a Delcam Featurecam which their experience indicates has swept away over 50 percent of their setting up times and thus costs.

The Delcam software is installed on WGD's Spinner 5 axis U620 machining centre. The Delcam Featurecam from the start accelerates prototyping by presenting a virtual image of the product under process. It has simultaneous parallel programming which allows the system to be re-programmed while it is doing another task.

Delcam's Featurecam at WGD indicates another step forward to the elimination of the major problem confronting New Zealand machining shops and their customers which is short runs. According to WGD there is now an increasingly competitive balance between programming time and cutting time.

Featurecam runs on Windows. It blends automation with control automatically selecting the appropriate tools, determining roughing and finishing passes, and calculating feeds and speeds.

Featurecam implementation was supervised by Delcam representative in New Zealand Lewis Worthing of WorthyCam. A UK-qualified toolmaker, he came to New Zealand via industry experience in Australia.

Lewis Worthing's shop floor to systems programming background further eliminated uncertainties in commissioning this advanced machining.
